Jean-Francois Pilatre de Rozier
Born on this day, 1754; Ob. 1785, whilst attempting to fly from France to England using both hydrogen and hot air. He taught physics and chemistry in Reims, before moving to Paris to give lectures on physics and chemistry, and then developing an interest in hot air balloons.

Ether as anaesthetic
On this day, 1842, ether was first used as a surgical anaesthetic, by Crawford Long.
